TikTok's "AI-generated" label on photo posts
How TikTok's AI-generated label reaches photo posts, why TikTok says an automatic label cannot be removed, and what cleaning image metadata changes.
By NoWatermark · Published
This page is about photo posts and carousels only. NoWatermark does not process video, and most TikTok AI-label questions are about video.
TikTok may add an “AI-generated” label to a post automatically, including when an uploaded image carries C2PA Content Credentials. TikTok’s own Help page says that once content is labelled this way you cannot remove the label from the post. Stripping Content Credentials from an image before you upload it removes that signal from your copy, and a re-scan confirms the file no longer carries it. But TikTok also describes its own detection models and an invisible watermark it is testing, and it asks creators to label realistic AI content themselves. Cleaning changes one of those inputs, not all of them.
Our prediction: medium confidence. TikTok says it may auto-label content that carries C2PA Content Credentials. We expect a photo cleaned with NoWatermark, with the re-scan showing Content Credentials removed, not to get the auto label those credentials trigger. The confidence is medium because TikTok also describes its own detection models and an invisible watermark it is testing, and ChatGPT and Gemini images carry SynthID, none of which cleaning changes. This is a prediction from TikTok’s documentation, not yet our own test result. We are running that test and will publish the result on this page.
Try it: check and clean your image before you post. It runs in your browser, and your file is never uploaded to us.
What triggers the label on TikTok photo posts
Platforms add labels from four sources: metadata read at upload, invisible watermarks, visual classifiers and self-disclosure. TikTok describes all four in its own pages. Only the first is something a file cleaner can change.
- Metadata. TikTok’s Help page says it “may automatically apply” the AI-generated label to content it identifies as completely generated or significantly edited with AI. This may happen when a creator uses TikTok AI effects or uploads AI-generated content that has Content Credentials attached. Note the word “may”: TikTok does not say the label always appears. In May 2024 TikTok announced it was reading Content Credentials and said the capability started rolling out “on images and videos”. It also said the rise in auto-labelled content “may be gradual at first”, since the metadata has to be there for TikTok to identify the content. We have not found a TikTok statement about carousels specifically.
- Invisible watermarks. In November 2025 TikTok said it was testing “invisible watermarking”, a watermark “that only we can read”. It said it would start adding it to AI-generated content made with TikTok tools and to content uploaded with C2PA Content Credentials. We cannot tell whether this test has become a standing feature. TikTok’s post does not say it reads SynthID or any other company’s watermark.
- Detection models. TikTok says it layers strategies, including “our own detection models”. It publishes nothing about how they work.
- Self-disclosure. Creators can turn on a label themselves. Details are below.
TikTok also says content made using only TikTok’s own AI effects is labelled automatically.
What removing metadata changes, verified
NoWatermark scans an image for C2PA manifests (showing the manifest size and claim generator), XMP, IPTC and AI generator metadata. It removes what you choose, scans the cleaned file again and marks a signal as removed only if the second scan cannot find it. The image data is copied byte for byte, not re-encoded.
The Remove AI label tool has presets. “Provenance-light” removes Content Credentials, XMP and embedded text and keeps EXIF and IPTC. “Everything removable” removes EXIF, IPTC, XMP, Content Credentials and embedded text, and keeps one EXIF rotation field by default. “Privacy-safe” removes location and device data and keeps provenance. Since TikTok names Content Credentials, “Provenance-light” is the closest match to what TikTok says it reads.
Our scanner shows that a Content Credentials manifest is present. It does not read whether a credential says an image was generated or edited. You can check a file first with the C2PA Checker, or read what Content Credentials are.
We have not yet tested a cleaned file on TikTok, so we cannot say what label, if any, it would receive.
What it cannot change
SynthID and other invisible watermarks are always reported as Unable to verify. NoWatermark cannot detect them, cannot remove them and cannot confirm they are absent. OpenAI’s help page says images from ChatGPT, Codex and the API include both C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks, so cleaning the metadata of a ChatGPT image leaves the SynthID signal untouched. See our SynthID guide.
TikTok says only it can read its own watermark, so no outside tool can check for it. Cleaning also does not touch TikTok’s detection models or the label you choose to apply.
TikTok itself acknowledges the limits of labelling. It says “a common industry challenge is that these kinds of labels may be removed when content is reuploaded or edited elsewhere”. In 2024 TikTok also said it would start attaching Content Credentials to TikTok content, which would “remain on content when downloaded”. That was a statement about the future, and we could not confirm that it is live for photo posts.
If your post is already labelled
- An automatic label. TikTok’s words: “Once your content is labeled as AI-generated with an auto label, you won’t be able to remove the label from your post.” Cleaning a file changes your copy, not a live post. Re-uploading a cleaned file creates a new post.
- A label you applied yourself. We did not find TikTok documentation on turning it off after posting.
- An appeal. TikTok’s Help page says only that auto labels cannot be removed. We found no appeal process for them.
If a real photo got the label after an AI-assisted edit, TikTok’s page defines “significantly edited” as “modified by AI beyond minor corrections or enhancements”. See also why is my photo labelled AI.
How to apply the creator label to a photo post
TikTok’s Help page gives these steps for photos:
- Tap the Add post (+) button at the bottom and capture your photo.
- Tap Post settings at the bottom.
- Turn the AI-generated content setting on.
The label then reads “creator labeled as AI-generated”. TikTok also warns that misleadingly labelling unaltered content with this label violates its Terms of Service and may result in the content being removed.
TikTok’s disclosure rules
TikTok’s Help page says: “We also require creators to label all AI-generated content that contains realistic images, audio, and video, as explained in our Community Guidelines.” It defines AI-generated content as including images, video or audio that is generated or modified by AI. On the same page, TikTok “encourages” labelling for content completely generated or significantly edited by AI, and “requires” it for realistic content.
The Community Guidelines, showing an effective date of 24 September 2026, say TikTok requires creators to label AI-generated or significantly edited content that shows realistic-looking scenes or people. They add: “Unlabeled content may be removed, restricted, or labeled by our team, depending on the harm it could cause.” This is a policy for all content types, not only photos.
On reach, the Help page says turning on the AI-generated content setting “won’t affect the distribution of your video as long as it doesn’t violate our Community Guidelines”. That is worded for video. The page says nothing equivalent for photo posts.
Removing metadata does not change these rules. If your image is realistic and AI-generated, TikTok’s requirement is that you label it.

Try it on your own image
Drop your image into Remove AI Label Metadata. It lists every signal the file carries, removes the ones you choose, and scans the cleaned copy again so you can see what is gone and what remains, including anything it can only mark Unable to verify. It all runs in your browser: your file never leaves your device. Photo posts only: NoWatermark does not process video.

Frequently asked questions
Can I remove TikTok's automatic AI-generated label?
TikTok's Help page says that once content is labelled AI-generated with an auto label, you will not be able to remove the label from your post. Anything you change has to happen before you upload.
Does TikTok read C2PA Content Credentials on photos?
TikTok said in May 2024 that it had started reading Content Credentials on images and videos. We have not found a TikTok statement about carousels specifically.
Will removing Content Credentials stop the label?
It removes that signal from your copy, and a re-scan confirms it. TikTok also says it uses its own detection models and is testing invisible watermarks, so we cannot promise a label will not appear. We have not tested this on TikTok.
Does turning the AI-generated label on hurt my reach?
TikTok's Help page says the setting will not affect the distribution of your video as long as it does not violate the Community Guidelines. That sentence is worded for video, and the page says nothing equivalent for photo posts.
Does NoWatermark work on TikTok videos?
No. NoWatermark processes JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, PDF and Markdown files. It does not process video.
